Livestock management in PastureMap+ is easy!
Creating a herd: Herds page > click the orange square in the bottom right corner > enter the herd’s name > Select the species > select the color you want associated with this herd > enter the number of animals in the herd > ensure the First Day on Pasture date is the date of the herd’s first movement of the season > select the herd’s last weigh date, if unknown make it the same as the First Day on Pasture > enter the average weight of the herd > enter the herd’s dry matter intake percentage (for most livestock it is 3% of their body weight) > enter the herd’s average daily gain in pounds > save
Best Practices:
- Cow-calf pairs
- Create two separate herds for cows and calves. This will make herd management much easier on you.
- The pairs will travel together on the map, and you will be able to add new calves to the calf herd, cull only the calf when necessary, and these calves’ weights will automatically increase if you enter their average daily gain
- Bulls
- Create a herd for the bull(s) so he can stay in his own pasture on the map until you move him in with the cows
- If you have a color-coded ear tag system, make the herd’s icon color the same color as their ear tags.
Can I upload ear tag numbers on PastureMap+? Not at this time; however you can create a herd by animal IDs, weights and more on the desktop, hello.pasturemap.com/login.
How detailed do I have to be with livestock management? You can be as detailed as you want to be. Some producers enter the individual ear tags or names of their livestock in PastureMap(+); and some producers leave the animal IDs and lineage as “Bulls 1, Bulls 2, etc.”
