Recordkeeping is important and vital when making informed decisions about your operation; and pasture inventory is a critical component in maintaining accurate inventory.
When should I update my pasture inventory? At bare minimum, you should update your pasture inventory at the beginning of each season. For the most updated inventory records, you should update your records as a herd moves into and out of the pasture; specifically the available dry matter and which types of plants you see in your pasture.
What does available grazing days mean? The number of available grazing days for each pasture varies throughout a grazing season due to multiple factors, including soil and forage types and grazable acres. When you inventory the available grazing days each season, you will be able to reflect back on each season and its expected number of available grazing days.
