PastureMap lets you move one or more herds to a new pasture or subdivision directly from the map, either right now or scheduled for later. You can move a single herd, move several at once, or carry out a move you planned earlier.
Before you start
- A herd only appears on the map when it is grazing a pasture. If you do not see a herd's icon, open the Herds page and move it into a pasture first.
Finding the herd on the map
- Navigate on the map to your herd or use the Search panel to find the herd on the map
- Each herd appears as its animal icon inside a colored circle.
- When more than one herd is in the same pasture or subdivision, the icon shows a number badge for how many herds are there.
- Hover over the icon to see the herd names.
Moving a herd
Opening the move options
- Click the herd icon on the map. A panel opens listing the herds at that spot, and the herd details open in the left panel.
- Check the box next to the herd you want to move. The Move button becomes available.
- Click Move. The move form opens.
Two shortcuts: each herd in the left details panel also has its own Move button, and you can drag a herd icon straight onto another pasture to start a move. Dragging is the fastest option when your ranch has many pastures or subdivisions. |
Choosing where to move the herd
- Set the target pasture. You can either click Select from list to open the paddock picker, choose a pasture or subdivision, and click Select; or click the destination pasture directly on the map.
- The Grazing field updates to the pasture you chose, and the “Target paddock is required” warning clears.
Setting the timing and saving
- Leave Herd is currently grazing checked.
- The Since date and time default to now. Adjust them if needed, or click Fill available time frame to set the timing for you.
- Optionally enter a number in Planned grazing days.
- Click Save. The herd moves to the new pasture, its icon relocates on the map, and the move is added to the herd's grazing history as the current location.
Moving more than one herd at once
- Click the icon where the herds are grouped, then check the box for each herd you want to move. You can also use the Show details for all Herds toggle to expand them.
- Click Move. One move form opens for all the herds you selected, with each herd named at the top.
- Choose a single target pasture. It applies to every selected herd.
- Set the timing and click Save. All selected herds move together, and each one shows the new pasture as its current location.
Planning a move for later
A planned move lets you line up a herd's next move ahead of time without moving the herd now. Use it when you already know where a herd is headed but are not ready to move it yet, such as scheduling a rotation a few days out. The herd keeps grazing its current pasture and its icon shows a marker for the pending move, so anyone on the ranch can see what is coming. When you are ready, you carry the move out in one step instead of entering it again.
Adding a planned move
- In the herd's left details panel, click + Add planned move.
- Choose the target pasture with Select from list or by clicking the map.
- Enter a number in Planned grazing days. This is required for a planned move.
- Optionally set Assigned to and add a Note.
- Click Save. The herd stays where it is, gains a planned-move marker (a clipboard icon), and a dashed line shows the planned destination on the map. The move appears under Planned in the herd's details.
| Note: A planned move will send a notification to the mobile application prompting you to perform the planned move. |
Performing a planned move
When you are ready to carry out a move you already scheduled:
- Click the herd icon. If the herd has a planned move, Perform Planned Move is available in the panel.
- Click Perform Planned Move. The move form opens with the planned pasture and days already filled in, dated now.
- Click Save. The herd moves into the planned pasture as its current location.
| Note: If you select more than one herd and they do not all have a planned move, Perform Planned Move is unavailable and only Move is offered. |
Tips
Tip: Dragging a herd icon directly onto another pasture is the quickest way to move it on a busy map.
Tip: Leave Herd is currently grazing checked. If it is unchecked when you save, PastureMap records the herd as not grazing and removes its icon from the map.
Troubleshooting
- Herd icon missing after a move? This could happen in a few different ways. See Why Did My Herd Disappear from the Map for more information.
- I don't see my herd. It may be in a pasture that is scrolled off your current view. Zoom out, or check the Herds page to confirm where it is currently grazing.
