The Item Summary panel shows everything PastureMap knows about whatever you click on the map. It works for any item: a pasture, a subdivision, a herd, or a piece of infrastructure. What appears in the panel changes based on what you've selected.
How to Open It
Click any item on the map - a pasture, subdivision, herd, or piece of infrastructure. The Item Summary panel opens automatically and displays details for what you clicked.
Pastures
When you click a pasture, the Item Summary panel shows its name, key metrics, forage data, and actions you can take on it.

At the top
The pasture name appears at the top of the panel. Two icons sit to the right of the name:
- Pencil - opens edit mode for the pasture's name and grazable area. Delete is also reached from inside edit mode.
- Adjust boundary - opens a full-screen mode where you can reshape the pasture's boundary.
Below the name, three metrics display side by side:
- Acres - total area of the pasture, calculated from the boundary you drew or imported.
- Grazable area - the percentage of total acres available for grazing. Defaults to 100% and can be adjusted in edit mode to account for non-grazable land like roads, ponds, or brush.
- Rest days - the number of days since the last herd left this pasture. Updates automatically when you log herd moves. Shows as --- if no herd has been in the pasture yet.
Forage Forecast
The Forage Forecast section estimates how many animal days (ADs) of forage the pasture can support. The dropdown lets you select the unit of measurement. The progress bar shows forage taken so far against the remaining estimate for the season.
Below the progress bar:
- Taken so far - animal days consumed in the current season. Click View Grazing Records to see the full list.
- Season (1 year) estimate - total forage capacity estimate for the season. Click Edit to enter your own estimate.
- Possible Remaining - season estimate minus what has been taken.
- Taken Last Season - animal days consumed in the previous season, with the date range that season covered.
- Recent Inventory - shows your most recent pasture inventory if one has been logged.
- NRCS 1-Year Estimate - a forage estimate derived from USDA NRCS soil survey data. Shows N/A in regions where NRCS data is unavailable. Hover over Why is it unavailable? for more detail.
Actions at the bottom
Below the forage data, a row of action links lets you do more with the pasture. The actions you see depend on whether the pasture has been subdivided.
Pasture with no subdivisions
- Pasture Note - add a text note to the pasture.
- Hay the Pasture - record a hay cutting event.
- Subdivide - turn the pasture into multiple subdivisions. See How to Subdivide a Pasture.
- Measure Fencing - measure the fencing perimeter directly on the map.
- View NRCS Soil Data - open USDA NRCS soil data for the pasture location.
Pasture with subdivisions
Once a pasture has been subdivided, the Subdivide button is replaced by three subdivision management actions:
- Pasture Note - add a text note to the pasture.
- Hay the Pasture - record a hay cutting event.
- Manage Subdivisions - adjust the boundaries of existing subdivisions or add new ones.
- Convert to Pastures - convert existing subdivisions into standalone pastures.
- Retire Subdivisions - end an active subdivision setup and return the pasture to a single grazeable unit.
- Measure Fencing - measure the fencing perimeter directly on the map.
- View NRCS Soil Data - open USDA NRCS soil data for the pasture location.
Subdivisions
When you click a subdivision, the Item Summary panel shows mostly the same information as a pasture, with a few differences.

Actions at the bottom
Acres, grazable area, rest days, and the Forage Forecast section all work the same as on a pasture.
Below the forage data, in addition those listed above, are specific action links for a subdivision:
- Manage Subdivisions - adjust subdivisions within the pasture. See How to Subdivide a Pasture.
- Convert to Pastures - convert existing subdivisions into standalone pastures.
- Retire Subdivisions - end an active subdivision setup and return the pasture to a single grazeable unit.
What's different
- Parent pasture link - below the subdivision name, you'll see of [Parent Pasture Name] as a clickable link. Click it to jump to the parent pasture's Item Summary.
- Pencil only at the top - only the pencil icon appears. Use it to edit the name and grazable area, or to delete the subdivision. Subdivision boundaries are managed through the Manage Subdivisions action below.
Acres, grazable area, rest days, the Forage Forecast section, and the action list at the bottom all work the same as on a pasture with subdivisions.
Herds
When you click a herd, the Item Summary panel shows herd composition, move controls, and grazing history.

At the top
The herd icon and name appear at the top of the panel, followed by:
- Count - total animals in the herd.
- Total weight - combined weight of all animals in the herd.
Display controls
Three controls let you adjust what shows for this herd:
- Show grazing days - toggle grazing days on or off on the map.
- Show planned moves - choose All or limit to a number you specify.
- Show historical moves - choose All or limit to a number you specify.
Herd actions
Below the controls, an action row lets you log and plan herd activity:
- Move - move the herd to a new pasture now.
- + Add planned move - schedule a future move.
- + Add historical move - log a past move that wasn't recorded in the system. If grayed out, the herd already has grazing records going back to the start of the season.
For full instructions on each action, see Recording Herd Moves.
Grazing history
The grazing history list shows each move for this herd, with the most recent at the top. Each row shows the date range, the pasture the herd was moved into, and a Planned column and Actual column.
- The Planned column shows the planned duration of the move, if one was set.
- The Actual column shows how long the herd was in that pasture. The current move shows Current in this column until the herd is moved again.
If a move is incomplete or has a gap, the row appears with a red Fix it button. Click it to resolve the missing data.
Suspend Grazing
Suspend Grazing is not in the Item Summary panel. To suspend grazing for a herd, click the herd icon directly on the map. A small card appears next to the herd with Move and Suspend Grazing options.
Clicking a herd icon on the map opens an inline card with Suspend Grazing and Move options
Infrastructure
When you click an infrastructure item, the Item Summary panel shows what it is, when it was installed, and any notes you've added.
