If a herd's icon is no longer on the map, the herd is not lost. PastureMap shows a herd's icon only while the herd is recorded as grazing a pasture, so when a herd stops grazing, its icon comes off the map. The herd and its full grazing history are still in PastureMap. First, try zooming out, since the herd may simply be in a pasture outside your current view. If it is still missing, one of the causes below is usually the reason, and you can put it back on the map in a few clicks.
Common causes
The icon disappears whenever a herd stops being recorded as grazing. The usual reasons are:
- Grazing was suspended. Using Suspend Grazing on a herd stops PastureMap from recording it as grazing and removes its icon from the map.
- The herd was saved as not grazing. Unchecking Herd is currently grazing when you save records as the herd is not grazing anywhere on your operation, rather than only moving it out of its current pasture to another. With no active grazing location, its icon comes off the map.
- A subdivision was retired with the herd still in it. Retiring a subdivision that still has a herd in it takes that herd off the map. Complete a herd movement prior to retiring.
Whatever the cause, the herd is still in PastureMap and you can bring it back onto the map.
Bringing the herd back onto the map
A herd that is not grazing any pasture shows a Move Into Pasture button in the Herds page, in place of a pasture name.
- Open the Herds page and find the herd. On the Live Herds tab, a herd that is off the map shows a Move Into Pasture button in the Grazing in column.
- Click Move Into Pasture.
- Choose the pasture you want and save. The herd is recorded as grazing again and its icon returns to the map.
| Tip: When you move a herd, leave Herd is currently grazing checked so its icon stays on the map. |
