The Subdivide flow splits a pasture into smaller grazing units so you can manage rotational grazing within it. The parent pasture stays intact for reporting while you graze and track herds inside the new subdivisions.
Open the Subdivide flow
- Click the pasture you want to subdivide on the map. The Item Summary panel opens.
- Click Subdivide at the bottom of the panel.
Draw a subdivision line
With the Draw Subdivision Line panel open, draw a line across the pasture to divide it. One line creates two subdivisions; you can draw additional lines to create more.
- Click on the map at the point where you want the line to start.
- Click additional points to extend the line across the pasture. As you draw, the proposed subdivisions display on the map with their estimated area in acres and the fence length in feet.
- Click Finish Line when the line is complete.
After finishing, you can draw more lines to create additional subdivisions, or click Continue to Review to move on.
Review subdivisions
The Review Subdivisions panel shows a summary of your subdivisions and lets you adjust the lines before naming them.
Adjustment options:
- Drag points on a line to adjust the subdivision boundaries.
- Click on a line to add a new point.
- Right-click on a point to delete it.
- Click Add More Lines to draw additional lines, or Delete Lines to remove existing ones.
When the subdivisions look right, click Next (Name) to continue.
Name subdivisions
Each subdivision must be given a name before you can save. The Name Subdivisions panel shows an input for each one with its area and perimeter as a reference.
To match a name input with its subdivision on the map, click either the input or the subdivision. The matching item highlights on both sides.
When all subdivisions are named, click Next. To go back and adjust the lines, click Back to Review.
Adjust herd moves (if applicable)
If a herd is currently in the pasture you're subdividing, the Adjust Herd Moves panel appears next so you can decide where the herd goes after the subdivision is saved.
Move the herd into a subdivision
- On the Move tab, click Select from list to choose which subdivision the herd should move into.
- Confirm or adjust the move date, time, and any other details.
- Click Save Subdivisions & Other Changes. The subdivisions are saved and the herd is moved into the selected subdivision.
To step back to the Name Subdivisions panel, click Back to Naming.
Suspend the herd instead of moving it
If you don't want to assign the herd to a new subdivision yet, click the Suspend tab on the Adjust Herd Moves panel. Suspending pauses the herd's grazing record at the time you set, leaves the herd unassigned, and saves the subdivision changes.
On the Suspend tab:
- The header reads Suspend [herd name].
- The previous grazing location is shown as inactive.
- The Until date and time default to the current moment. Adjust these if you want the suspension to begin later.
- Click Save Subdivisions & Other Changes to finish.
| NOTE: When you suspend a herd, its icon disappears from the map because the herd is no longer assigned to a grazing location. To restore it, go to the Herds screen and move it into a new pasture. The icon will reappear on the map after the move is recorded. |
After saving
The map updates to show the new subdivisions, separated by dashed lines. The Most Recent Activity feed reflects any herd move that was part of the subdivision.
Troubleshooting
If subdivision lines won't draw on the map
If clicking on the map during the Draw Subdivision Line step doesn't set a point, check the following:
- Confirm you are clicking inside the boundary of the pasture you are subdividing. Points placed outside the pasture are ignored.
- Confirm the Draw Subdivision Line panel is open on the left. If you accidentally closed it, click the pasture again and click Subdivide.
- Make sure you are not in a different map mode (such as measuring fencing). Close any other open panel first.
- If the line preview still doesn't appear, refresh the page and start the Subdivide flow again. Unsaved points will be lost.
If names won't save on the Name Subdivisions step
Every subdivision must have a name before you can continue. If the Next button is disabled or you see an error after entering names, check the following:
- Every name input is filled in. Empty inputs block the save.
- Names are unique within the parent pasture. Two subdivisions cannot share the same name.
- Names don't conflict with existing subdivision names elsewhere on the same pasture (including ones from earlier rounds of subdividing).
- Names don't contain special characters that PastureMap rejects. If a name won't save, try a simpler version with letters, numbers, hyphens, and spaces only.
