PastureMap lets you cull animals from a herd to record when they leave it for good, whether they were sold, died, were slaughtered, or were culled from your operation. Culled animals drop out of the herd's live count and move to the Culled Animals tab, where their record stays for your history.
Before you start
- You select animals from the Live Animals tab, so the herd needs at least one live animal.
- Culling is permanent. A culled animal cannot be returned to the live herd, so confirm your selection before you commit.
Note: Culling is different from deleting. A culled animal moves to the Culled Animals tab and stays in your records. Deleting removes the animal from the herd.
Culling animals from a herd
- Open the herd from Herds and stay on the Live Animals tab.
- Select the animals you want to cull using the checkboxes in the animal list.
- Click Cull Animals.
Note: If you click Cull Animals before selecting any animals, PastureMap shows the message “Before proceeding, select animals that you want to modify.” Click Dismiss, select your animals in the list, then click Cull Animals again.
- In the Cull [N] Animals dialog, set the Record Date and time to when the animals left the herd.
- Under Reason, choose Sold, Dead, Slaughtered, or Culled.
Note: A reason is required. The reason you choose is recorded in the herd's activity log and shown in the Status column on the Culled Animals tab.
- (Optional) Click View selected animals to confirm the list before you commit.
Note: This list is read-only. To change which animals are included, click Close, fix your selection in the animal list, then reopen the dialog.
- Click Cull.
The animals leave the live count and move to the Culled Animals tab. The herd's activity log records the action as “Marked [N] animals as [reason].”
The live count drops and the activity log records the cull.
Viewing culled animals
Open the herd and click the Culled Animals tab to see every animal you have culled from it. Each row shows:
- Animal ID
- Birthdate
- Start Weight (lb) and Start Weight Date
- Last Weight (lb)
- Status (the reason the animal was culled)
- Cull Date
Note: On the Culled Animals tab, Add Animals, Move Animals, and Cull Animals are unavailable, since those actions apply only to live animals.
