Retiring a herd takes it off your active Live Herds list without deleting it. Retiring and unretiring act on the herd itself, not on its animals: the herd keeps its grazing history and moves to the Retired Herds tab, where you can bring it back later.
Before you start
- Retiring and unretiring work at the herd level. They do not move, archive, or restore animals.
- A herd can only be retired once it has no live animals. You empty the herd first, then retire it.
Removing the animals first
Before you can retire a herd, its Live Animals count must be 0. Empty the herd by culling the animals, deleting them, or moving them all to another herd.
| Note: Culling and deleting are not reversible. Culled or deleted animals are not restored when you unretire the herd, and there is no way to uncull an animal. If you want those animals in the herd again later, you add them back. |
Retiring a herd
- Open the herd from Herds on the Live Herds tab.
- Remove the live animals so Live Animals reads 0.
- Click Retire at the top right of the herd.
| Note: If the herd still has live animals, PastureMap blocks the retire and shows “This herd currently can’t be retired. It has active animals in it. Please remove them before proceeding.” Click Cancel, remove the animals, then try again. |
- In the Retire Herd dialog, review the confirmation. A retired herd stops appearing in the live list but still appears in grazing records and counts toward ADAs and rest days.
- Click Retire.
The herd now reads Inactive with the date it was retired, drops off the Live Herds tab, and appears under Retired Herds.
| Tip: Retiring an emptied herd keeps your Live Herds list clean. Once you have removed all the animals from a herd you no longer run, retire it so it stays on record without cluttering your active list. |
Unretiring a herd
Unretiring brings a herd back to your active Live Herds list.
- On the Herds page, click the Retired Herds tab.
- Open the herd you want to bring back.
- Click Unretire at the top right of the herd.
The herd returns to the Live Herds tab as an active herd.
| Note: Unretiring restores the herd, not its animals. If you emptied the herd by culling or deleting before retiring, it comes back with no animals. Add animals again to repopulate it. |
