PastureMap lets you create a herd to track a group of animals, their weights, and their grazing. You can build a herd by entering its details in the app, or by importing your animal records from a spreadsheet.
Creating a herd
- From the Herds page, select Add New Herd in the top right. The Create Herd window opens.
- Enter a Name. This field is required. If you leave it blank, PastureMap shows "This field is required" and will not save the herd.
- Choose an Icon and a Color. The preview circle updates to show how the herd will look on the map and in your lists.
- Enter the Total Animals count. The weight and date fields stay locked until this is above 0, so enter your animal count before the optional details.
- Fill in any optional details: Avg Animal Weight, Last Weigh Date, Target ADG, Est DMI (defaults to 3%), and First Day On Pasture.
- Select Add. The herd appears in your Live Herds list.
The new Stockers herd in the Live Herds list.
Note: First Day On Pasture records the start date for the animals in the herd. It does not place the herd on a pasture. To put the herd on a pasture, see Moving Herds on the Map.
Creating a herd from a spreadsheet
If you already track your animals in a spreadsheet, you can import them instead of entering each animal by hand. The spreadsheet only brings in the animals. You still name the herd and choose its icon and color in the Create Herd window, either before you start the import or after your animals come in.
Note: Each import creates one herd. The spreadsheet holds the animals for a single herd, not multiple herds. To bring in more than one herd, repeat these steps with a fresh template for each one.
- From the Herds page, select Add New Herd. In the Create Herd window you can enter the Name, Icon, and Color now, or wait until after the import. When you are ready to bring in your animals, select Add From XLS File at the top of the window.
- Under Step One, select Download to get the template. Open it in Excel and add your animal records, using the column labels exactly as they appear in the template.
- Under Step Two, drag your completed file into the upload area, or select Browse to choose it.
- Select Next. PastureMap shows a Does this look correct? screen listing each animal's details from your file.
The review screen lists each animal's details for you to check before confirming.
- Review the records. If anything looks wrong, select Back, fix your file, and upload it again. When the records look right, select Ok.
- The Create Herd window fills in with your imported animals. Confirm the Name, Icon, and Color, filling them in now if you have not already, then select Add to create the herd.
Note: The template marks only Animal ID as required, but the import will not finish unless every animal also has a valid First Day on Pasture and Last Weight Date. If either is missing, animals will not be added to your herd.
