The Herds page lists every herd on your ranch and is where you open a herd to manage its animals. This article orients you to the page. For the tasks you do from here, such as creating, moving, weighing, or culling, see the linked articles.
Opening the Herds page
In the top navigation, click Herds. The page opens to your herds, with total (how many herds you have) and live animals (the combined head count) shown at the top.
The three tabs
Herds are grouped into three tabs.
- Live Herds: your active herds. This is the default view.
- Retired Herds: herds you have set aside. They keep their records but no longer appear under Live Herds. See Retiring and Unretiring a Herd.
- Terminal Herds: the buckets animals move to when you cull them, grouped by reason (Slaughtered, Dead, Sold, and Culled). See Culling Animals.
The Terminal Herds tab groups removed animals by cull reason.
The Live Herds table
Each row is a herd. The columns show:
- Name: the herd name and its color icon. Click the name to open the herd.
- Grazing in: the pasture the herd is currently grazing. If a herd is not placed in a pasture, this shows “---” with a Move Into Pasture button.
- Live Animals: the herd’s head count.
- Avg Weight and Combined Weight: the average and total weight of the herd.
- Avg Daily DMI: the herd’s estimated dry matter intake per day, in pounds.
| Note: Grazing in shows where the herd is now. On a herd’s detail page you may also see Grazed in, which is where the herd grazed before. |
Finding an animal across herds
The Animal Finder lets you search for a single animal without knowing which herd it is in. To open it, click the blue search button to the right of the search box at the top of the Herds page.
The Animal Finder lists every animal on your ranch. Type an animal ID, or any other detail, into the Search field and the list filters as you type.
Each result shows the animal's ID, Group, Type, Sex, Sire, Dam, and the Herd it belongs to. Use the controls at the bottom to set how many animals show per page and to move between pages.
The Animal Finder also finds animals in your terminal herds, such as this sold animal.
Click a result to open the herd that animal belongs to.
| Note: The Animal Finder searches all of your animals, including animals you have culled, sold, or marked as dead. It is separate from the search box on the Live Herds table, which only filters by herd name. |
Moving a herd into a pasture
When a herd has no current pasture, its Grazing in cell shows a Move Into Pasture button. Clicking it opens the move workflow, where you pick a target paddock. It opens to a map view that you can collapse to the smaller form. For the full steps, see Moving Herds on the Map.
Opening and managing a herd
Click any herd name to open its detail page, where you add, weigh, move, cull, and note its animals, edit them in bulk, or retire the herd. Each of those is covered in its own article (see below). For a tour of the herd detail page itself, see Herds Page Sections.
Page actions
- Add New Herd: create a new herd. See Creating a Herd.
- Export to XLS: emails a spreadsheet report to your account's email address. The report includes a summary plus a sheet for each herd listing its animals and their weigh history.
- The search box filters the list by herd name.
